Since 1837, Hermès has been making leather goods. It began with harnesses and bridles for horses. By the 1950s, it was manufacturing women’s accessories, including handbags. In the early 1980s, then chairman Louis Duma sat next to actress Jane Birkin on a flight to Paris. Some accounts have it that Birkin’s husband ran over the basket she always used as a handbag with his automobile. Anyway, the handbag she had that day was not working. Dumas asked Birkin what kind of handbag would work for her. And, just like that, a chance encounter brought the Birkin bag to life.
Fortune Magazine considers the Birkin Bag a good investment. At the time Fortune wrote its article in June 2015, Birkin bags ranged in price from $12,000 through $223,000. That high-end price, $223,000, broke a world record.It was a crocodileskin Birkin with gold and diamond hardware. It was set at a Hong Kong auction. The prior record was $185,000. That’s an 18% increase from the prior record.
Well, almost a year later, in May 2016, at yet another Hong Kong auction, anothercrocodile skin Birkin with diamond gold and diamond hardware, was sold for $300,168. Not only did it break the Birkin Bag record with a 26% increase, it broke all handbag records.
